# Keep typing bazel with the tools/bazel wrapper

***

![bazel commands pass through tools/bazel, which routes build, test and lint to aspect and query, info and clean to Bazel](https://mintlify.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/aspectbuild/images/marketing/illustrations/shipped-tools-bazel-wrapper.svg)

Rolling the Aspect CLI out to a team shouldn't mean retraining fifty people to stop typing `bazel`. With a wrapper, it's one pull request.

[`aspect setup tools-bazel-wrapper`](https://aspect.build/docs/cli/tasks/setup_tools_bazel_wrapper) writes a `tools/bazel` script that Bazelisk runs on every `bazel` command. It sends `build`, `test`, `lint`, `format`, `gazelle`, `buildifier`, `delivery`, and your custom AXL tasks to `aspect`, and everything else (`query`, `info`, `clean`) to vanilla Bazel. It only picks the binary; your flags pass through as typed.

```shell theme={null}
aspect setup tools-bazel-wrapper
git add tools/bazel tools/bazel.md
```

* **Pinned to a release.** It downloads from the latest aspect-cli release tag, never `main`. Re-running leaves an up-to-date copy alone and offers a newer release as an upgrade.
* **A CI gate.** `--check` exits non-zero when `tools/bazel` is missing or differs from the version you asked for.
* **Your routing.** Edit `ASPECT_VERBS` at the top of the script to keep `bazel build` on vanilla Bazel, or to add `run` once `aspect run` suits you. `bazel run` stays on Bazel by default.
* **A way out.** `ASPECT_WRAPPER_SKIP=1` bypasses routing for a shell session, and `--uninstall` removes the files.

The `tools/bazel` hook is a Bazelisk feature, so the `bazel` on your team's `PATH` needs to be Bazelisk. The wrapper is free, and the [docs](https://aspect.build/docs/cli/tasks/setup_tools_bazel_wrapper.md) cover every flag and routing rule.
