# macOS remote execution on Aspect Enterprise

***

![Bazel routes Linux actions to the Linux pool and Apple actions to a Mac pool in the same cluster](https://mintlify.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/aspectbuild/images/marketing/illustrations/shipped-macos-remote-execution.svg)

A Swift compile can't run on a Linux worker. So a repository with an iOS app either builds its Apple targets on a Mac in CI, one machine's worth of parallelism, or splits the build in two.

On Aspect Enterprise, Mac workers join the same [remote execution](https://aspect.build/platform/remote-execution) cluster as your Linux pools. A Mac pool advertises `OSFamily = Darwin`, Bazel's toolchain resolution sends Apple actions there and everything else to Linux, and one `bazel test //...` covers both.

```python platforms/BUILD.bazel theme={null}
platform(
    name = "macos_arm64_remote",
    constraint_values = [
        "@platforms//os:macos",
        "@platforms//cpu:arm64",
    ],
    exec_properties = {
        "OSFamily": "Darwin",
        # plus whatever else your pool advertises
    },
)
```

## How the workers run

* **Bare-metal Macs** on AWS, Apple Silicon or Intel.
* **Several actions per host**, so one long link doesn't leave the rest of the machine idle.
* **Lazy inputs.** Build actions run in a virtual NFSv4 build directory, so inputs come out of the CAS as the action reads them. Apple SDKs are huge and most actions touch a sliver of them.
* **One Xcode per pool.** Pin the same version in your repository so a mismatch fails loudly.

[macOS remote execution](https://aspect.build/docs/aspect-workflows/platform/guides/macos-remote-execution.md) covers targeting a pool and what to plan for before you migrate: Xcode versions, code signing, and FileVault. [Remote execution on Aspect Enterprise](https://aspect.build/docs/aspect-workflows/enterprise/remote-execution.md) covers worker pools in general.
